When to Buy a Lot and Build

This blog discusses the option of purchasing land and building an architecturally designed home as opposed to considering a pre-owned house.

At EKAN, on occasion we are requested to accompany a buyer on a prospective purchase of land. We can only comment on site features and their impact on the proposed future development.

For your consideration, here are some of the benefits to purchasing a serviced lot and building:

  • If you must have new…
  • If you can wait for the right house…
  • If you really want something special…
  • If you want selection control over most features…
  • If you want your personality embedded in the house…
  • If you are prepared for the challenge of developing land…
  • If you understand the inter-relationship between budget-schedule-quality…
  • If you have finances in-place to support design and construction progress payments…

Then buying land only may be a viable option for you. The architect can draw your vision. The contractactor can build your dream.

I’m a firm believer in the value of owning real estate. For those who can, purchasing a lot and building their dream home has enormous advantages over purchasing a pre-owned property and I would encourage every homeowner to consider this option first, if at all possible.

Building to your specifications on land that you have purchased is not an activity exclusively for the well-off buyer. This practice can be adopted by any prospective home owner with a good credit record. There are many checks and balances that, if followed, will ensure a successful outcome.
